Background
Keyamba Elementary School, our inaugural and most cherished project, serves over 600 students from kindergarten to eighth grade. Due to budgetary constraints, the city requires kindergarten students to pay a monthly tuition of 50 birr.
Many, if not all, of the students’ parents rely on physically demanding labor for their livelihoods, such as manual laundry, day labor, or making injera for more affluent community members and live way below poverty line, struggling to cover even the tuition.
We also discovered that the teachers were earning a meager annual salary of approximately 8,400 birr (around $420 USD), which was insufficient for a sustainable living.
Our Method
We saw a need and we felt compelled to jump into action. No matter how small, any gesture to help your fellow human, is an honorable gesture indeed.
Outcome
We prioritized bringing joy to these young children by constructing a simple yet essential playground. The playground features swings, slides, spinning wheels, and other fun elements, aiming to enhance the joyful learning experience that every child deserves in a school setting.
To alleviate the financial burden on families, we covered the tuition for 52 kindergarten students. This enabled parents to allocate their limited resources towards essential needs like food and shelter. By relieving parents of this financial stress, we also indirectly supported teachers, whose salaries were previously tied to tuition payments. Through private donations, we were able to increase teacher salaries, providing them with a more sustainable livelihood.
