Building Homes for low income residents

In addition to our school projects in Gojam, we sought and obtained permission from local authorities in Gonder to assist in building 25 of the 210 housing units designated for the poorest families in the region. This area faces significant challenges, particularly in terms of accessibility due to limited transportation options.

The construction costs for these homes were primarily comprised of labor, as the necessary materials—chika (a mixture of dirt, water, and hay), inchet (studs), and korkoro (roofing)—are relatively inexpensive. We employed approximately thirty day laborers to complete the project within a month.

While our primary focus as a nonprofit organization is on education, we decided to undertake this housing project due to several factors. First, we had the necessary budget to support the initiative. Second, many of the families in need had school-aged children who were forced to sleep in harsh conditions. We believed that by alleviating their housing situation, we could create a more conducive environment for their children's education.
