Tsegereda School Supplies Initiative
Our third pillar and initiative is the annual distribution of school supplies. This initiative was inspired and named after a little girl named Tsegereda. She inspired us to start it just a year ago by simply asking for two pens and a few folders for herself and then asked if it wasn’t too much trouble if we would also help her friends out in a similar financial strain as her. Cheers to you Tsegereda for being so thoughtful.
2024- School Supply Drive
2024 has remained a difficult year for serving rural communities due to ongoing armed conflicts and the resulting insecurity. Although the Tsighereda program was suspended in 2023, we found an opportunity to collaborate with individuals in the capital who were raising funds to provide school supplies to schools in the Lalibela province.
We successfully resumed the Tsighereda program in 2024, reaching a record number of students. This year, we distributed 7,728 notebooks, 4,000 pens, 3,024 pencils, 1,000 erasers, and 2,016 pencil sharpeners to a total of 1,000 students.
2022- School Supply Drive
For school year 2022, we provided school supplies (notebooks, pens, pencils and bars of soap) for a total of 605 students at six different schools and towns, with a special focus on displaced kids. Most of these supplies will be good enough for the entire school year, particularly for those kids within grades 1-8. High school students will need to be resupplied for the following semester.
In addition to notebooks, we were fortunate to meet sixteen incredibly intelligent and visually impaired students. We asked how we can help improve their student experience in addition to building classrooms that accommodates their conditions. Per their request, we provided all of them pocket size rechargeable audio recorders.
2021- School Supply Drive
On our 5th annual Tsigereda Project, we distributed 3,648 notebooks, 1389 pen & pencils, and 926 bar of soaps to 463 students. These items were distributed mainly at four different neighborhoods and schools.
2020- School Supply Drive
In September of 2020, we provided a year’s worth of school folders, pens, and pencils for 487 students, in four different schools throughout the region of Gonder. With COVID in mind and sanitation being of the upmost importance in the world at the moment, we also gave away two bars of soap to each of the 487 students. From these students, we identified 61 who were not able to purchase their own uniform. We took their measurement and purchased each of them uniforms for this school year.
2019- School Supply Drive
We kicked off the 2019/2020 Take Care Of Home projects by conducting our annual (3rd) school supply drive. Consecrating on one single spot where we saw a major need, we are able to serve a total of 307 students.
Thank you to all the volunteers who aided us in the distribution process.
2018- School Supply Drive
On three separate events, we were able to supply a total of 290 students with a year worth of school supplies, minus the backpacks. A total of 2,016 folders, a couple pens and pencils per student. All supplies were bought locally from a small business owner.
Special thanks to our volunteers and Gebriel church and its youth mahber for the assistance in handling the sometimes overwhelming crowd. We wish we could’ve accommodated everyone in need.
2017- School Supply Drive
With the help of a local group of young men and women, we were able to hand out approximately 750 folders and 150 pens to 74 students in the range of 1st to 12th grade. Most of these students come from a completely broken family and must fetch for money themselves by any means, not only for school supplies but also for food and water.
We also handed out a luggage full of clothing to some of our school supply recipients and their parents.
