Background
Walaj Primary School, established in 1969 as a satellite school (meant to serve as a valve for nearby elementary schools), serves nearly 900 kids in its current stance. With the growth of the community and as their demands increased, it became an established elementary soon after and currently takes kids from other nearby satellite schools. Satellite schools are for small towns with kids ranging from grades 1-4.
Our Method
We prioritize community engagement in our school-building projects, visiting a minimum of three to four towns and schools annually. Through meetings with school administrators and community members, we carefully select project sites based on need, accessibility, and the community's willingness to participate. By fostering local involvement, we aim to empower communities and ensure the sustainability of our projects
Outcome
The newly constructed building features eight classrooms. This project proved particularly challenging due to security concerns that caused a 4 month delay. As of 2023, Walaj Primary has an 88% student retention rate, a higher percentage compared to other rural areas we have worked in. The 12% dropout rate is due to various factors, one being a lack of adequate support and classroom space. Our eight classroom expansion is expected to alleviate 65% of the school’s classroom shortage, contributing to improved student outcomes.
