Background
Teda or Tseda Primary School, named after the town it serves, was established in 1986 by the local board of education. In its early years, the school received some support from an external NGO, including office space and a couple of classrooms for kindergarten students. However, since that initial assistance, the school has faced a chronic lack of resources for facilities improvements or expansion.
Today, Teda Primary School is home to over 2,600 students, with an average of 80-90 children per classroom for grades 1 to 8. In addition, there are 191 kinder-gardeners, who take their classes outdoors at the moment due to COVID. To accommodate the large number of students, the school employs a shift system, limiting lessons to 30 minutes and allowing teachers to work with approximately 30 students per class in three shifts.
Our Method
We prioritize community engagement in our school-building projects, visiting a minimum of three to four towns and schools annually. Through meetings with school administrators and community members, we carefully select project sites based on need, accessibility, and the community's willingness to participate. By fostering local involvement, we aim to empower communities and ensure the sustainability of our projects
Outcome
The newly constructed building at Teda Primary School features eight classrooms, providing a much-needed upgrade for both educators and students. These modern classrooms offer a safer and more conducive learning environment, allowing for increased student engagement. The school was also able to reduce its teaching shifts from three to two, enabling students to spend more time on each subject.
To commemorate the inauguration of the new building, our team distributed school supplies to all the students at Teda Primary School.
