According to the UN World Water Development report published in 2019, on a global scale, half of the people who drink water from unsafe sources live in Africa where the burden of collecting water lies mainly on women and girls, many of whom spend more than thirty minutes on each journey to fetch water. Without safe, accessible water, these people are likely to face multiple challenges, including poor health and living conditions, malnutrition, and lack of opportunities for education and employment.

Water is the source of life and access to clean water is the most essential thing for all human beings. Like many countries in Africa, Ethiopia faces similar challenges with access to clean water. An estimated 68% of the population lacks this basic necessity. Take Care of Home pride itself on providing complete solutions to those we serve. With the Water is Life initiative, we are making installing water lines a staple part of we are. By helping resident gain access to clean water, we are not only improving health and living conditions but also helping to make sure girls have the time to get proper education. Young girls are usually tasked with the arduous burden of fetching water for the family.

As we gradually phase out our sponsored families monthly aid, we saw it necessary to install water lines for each family (based on need and accessibility of main water pipes), amongst other systems of support. The average cost to extend a line and install a meter is 4500 birr, which is about $100. This project goes hand in hand with our efforts to build schools and aid families that have a significant need for financial support.
